Maryland Opens 2026 Against Hampton With an 18-Game Nonconference Streak

The Maryland vs. Hampton season opener arrives with a simple headline and a demanding standard. The Terrapins begin 2026 Saturday night at SECU Stadium carrying the nation’s longest active nonconference winning streak—18 games—and enough returning production to expect more than a comfortable opening result.

Maryland and Hampton have never met in football. Kickoff is scheduled for September 5 at 8 p.m. Eastern on Big Ten Network and the Maryland Sports Radio Network. The Terrapins have won 15 straight nonconference season openers and are 19–0 against FCS opponents since 2000, winning those games by an average of 33.1 points.

Those numbers make Maryland the clear favorite, but the more useful question is how ready the roster looks for the schedule ahead. The Terps return 71 percent of last season’s production, a figure Maryland lists as second nationally. They bring back 74 percent on defense and 68 percent on offense, including eight of the team’s 11 All-Big Ten selections from 2025.

Quarterback Malik Washington is the center of that continuity. As a true freshman, he completed 273 passes for 2,963 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also became one of only two Big Ten true freshmen since 1996 to finish a season with more than 2,500 passing yards and 300 rushing yards.

Washington will operate with a new voice in his headset. Clint Trickett takes over as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach after leading a Jacksonville State offense that averaged 408.7 yards and 28.1 points per game last season. Saturday offers the first public look at how that system fits Washington, running back DeJuan Williams and tight end Dorian Fleming.

Maryland also added 17 transfers, including reinforcements at receiver, defensive line and in the secondary. The opener should reveal which newcomers are already ready for meaningful roles, especially before Virginia Tech arrives September 19 and Big Ten play begins one week later.

The stadium presentation has changed, too. Maryland’s updated game-day plan adds a Beach Bash theme, rally towels for the first 7,500 fans and recognition of the university’s Divine Nine organizations. PowerPage previously detailed the broader SECU Stadium upgrades for 2026.

An opener against an FCS opponent is not designed to answer every question. It can still expose timing, protection and tackling problems before the schedule becomes less forgiving. For Maryland, extending the streak is the baseline. Looking organized, explosive and connected would make the night feel like a real beginning.
