Morgan State Takes a 1–0 Start Into a First-Ever Test at Arizona State

Morgan State at Arizona State is more than the second stop on a difficult road swing. Saturday night brings the first football meeting between the programs, the Sun Devils’ first game against an HBCU and a national-platform opportunity for Baltimore’s Bears to test the finish that carried them through opening week.

Morgan State arrives 1–0 after beating North Carolina A&T 17–7. The Bears trailed 7–3 before a goal-line stand and blocked field goal changed the game. Cameron Edge then found Joseph Towler for a 68-yard touchdown, and Jordan Barnett’s late 22-yard scoring run completed a fourth-quarter takeover.

Edge’s first Morgan State start offered a controlled foundation. He completed 13 of 19 passes for 167 yards, one touchdown and one interception, distributing 13 completions among nine receivers. Barnett added 114 rushing yards, giving the offense a physical counterweight to the quick-strike connection that put the Bears ahead.

The challenge rises sharply in Tempe. Arizona State went 8–5 last season and is 19–8 across the past two years under Kenny Dillingham. The Sun Devils named Kentucky transfer Cutter Boley their starting quarterback after he completed 65.8 percent of his passes in 2025, a Kentucky freshman record.

Morgan State’s defense will need the same situational strength it showed in Greensboro, but with fewer empty possessions. Arizona State averaged 25.8 points per game last season and has won 11 of its past 13 games at Mountain America Stadium. The Bears cannot rely on one fourth-quarter swing to erase every mistake against a deeper Big 12 roster.

A win would be historic, but the evaluation is broader than an upset-or-bust result. Morgan State needs to protect Edge, establish Barnett early and prove its defense can carry fourth-quarter discipline into four quarters against FBS speed. The Bears earned confidence in week one.
