Trey Hendrickson Gives the Ravens Early Proof Their Biggest Free-Agent Bet Can Close Games

The Trey Hendrickson Ravens investment has not produced a regular-season sack yet, but Baltimore has already seen why it made the biggest outside free-agent commitment in franchise history. The Ravens signed the veteran edge rusher to a reported four-year, $112 million contract, betting that his technique and closing ability can change a defense that too often let late leads breathe last season.

Hendrickson’s summer supplied an early answer. He repeatedly reached the backfield during joint practices against Minnesota and Washington, creating the kind of third-down disruption Baltimore expects to carry into meaningful games. General manager Eric DeCosta said this week that Hendrickson has been everything the organization envisioned and described him as a potential fourth-quarter closer.

That role addresses a measurable weakness. Baltimore finished last season with 30 sacks, a total better than only two NFL teams. Even when the defense controlled stretches of games, it did not generate enough pressure to end drives before opponents could attack the scoreboard late.

The risk is easy to identify. Hendrickson is 31, and a core muscle injury limited him to seven games last season. The Ravens are paying for the possibility that his best work is still available, not merely honoring what he accomplished in Cincinnati. He led the league with 17.5 sacks in both 2023 and 2024, while his pass-rush win rate remained strong during the injury-shortened 2025 season.

Baltimore’s confidence is rooted in more than a highlight reel. Coaches and teammates have emphasized Hendrickson’s preparation, repeatable rush plan and willingness to teach younger edge defenders. Players also voted him onto the Ravens’ 10-member leadership group before he has appeared in a game for the franchise.

The Ravens’ initial 53-man roster includes several young rushers who should benefit from the attention Hendrickson draws. His presence does not remove the need for Mike Green, Tavius Robinson, Zion Young and others to win their matchups, but it gives the front a proven threat offenses must locate on every passing down.

The real evaluation begins September 13 at Indianapolis. Until then, Baltimore can only grade the process: health, practice production, leadership and the way one elite rusher changes protection plans. On each of those early measures, the Ravens’ largest outside bet is already giving them reasons to believe.
