Baltimore Community Foundation Grants Have a September 23 Deadline for Local Projects

Baltimore Community Foundation has a September 23 deadline for nonprofits seeking support through its Stronger Schools and Stronger Neighborhoods grants. The current application cycle covers work benefiting Baltimore City and Baltimore County, giving community organizations a funding opportunity for projects developed with the people and institutions they intend to serve.

The foundation’s grant application page provides the online portal, a template and eligibility guidance. BCF generally awards grants to organizations with 501(c)(3) status and also considers projects using a fiscal sponsor that meets its financial standards. This is an organizational grant opportunity; residents with an idea should connect with an eligible community partner before preparing a proposal.

Stronger Schools focuses on kindergarten readiness, student mental health, and school climate and culture. BCF’s school funding guidance says proposals should be developed by, or directly with, the leaders of the schools involved and reflect their goals. Examples include early literacy support, parent engagement, enrichment opportunities and efforts that help families stay connected to school.

The neighborhood program supports work that makes communities safer, cleaner, greener or more vibrant. Its neighborhood funding guidance emphasizes resident involvement and demonstrated community support. Potential areas range from addressing dumping and improving green spaces to preserving shared amenities. BCF says it will not consider proposals from a single individual or an outside organization without support from the affected residents.

For applicants, the useful first step is to review the template with partners and decide what the project will accomplish, who will participate and how progress will be measured. Gather required attachments before submitting through the portal. The application page lists a typical award of $20,000, while noting that amounts vary; that figure is guidance, not a promised grant.
