Good neighbor’s sixth annual Design Camp runs September 14–19, bringing Baltimore artists, designers and neighbors into a week of cultural exchange. This year’s theme, “From Baltimore to the World,” connects local creative work with international perspectives through conversations, installations, music and opportunities to make something together.
The organizer’s current program moves through connections with the Philippines and Puerto Rico, Korea, Egypt, Sudan, and India and Pakistan. Morning programming includes Perfect Memory Radio broadcasts, while evening gatherings bring different creative practices into conversation. Check the daily schedule before traveling: activities take place at different locations, with individual listings supplying the relevant addresses.
The format has roots in a deliberate shift toward participation. In a September 2 Design Hotels interview, founder Shawn Chopra explained that the original Baltimore Design Week became Design Camp after local involvement made the gathering more active. His aim was to connect visiting practitioners with people already doing creative work in Baltimore.
Chopra’s interview also describes an audience extending beyond professional designers. Art, architecture, fashion, film and music are already part of everyday life, he noted. That makes the program relevant to neighbors curious about how things are made, as well as working artists seeking conversation and connections. The emphasis is on exchange across disciplines rather than a single industry gathering.
Saturday, September 19, brings Open Hands Day and a studio crawl, alongside two COMO DEMO paper-lamp workshops at Library19, 606 South Ann Street. The organizer advertises free public programming but links the lamp workshops to separate ticketing. Review the activity you want before assuming that a general RSVP covers every session or guarantees a workshop place.
Use good neighbor’s official schedule and its linked registration pages to build a visit around your interests. Design Camp adds a broader invitation to meet makers, explore spaces and take part in the city’s ongoing cultural life.
