Yankees Add Heliot Ramos and Promote George Lombard Jr. in a Lineup Shake-Up

The Yankees’ trade-deadline work is now turning into an immediate roster reset.

New York acquired outfielder Heliot Ramos from the San Francisco Giants shortly before Monday’s 6 p.m. ET deadline, sending left-hander Henry Lalane and infielder Kaeden Kent to San Francisco. MLB Pipeline ranked Lalane fifth and Kent 13th in the Yankees’ system before the trade.

Ramos gives manager Aaron Boone a right-handed bat who can help against left-handed pitching. The 2024 National League All-Star hit .264 with a .304 on-base percentage, a .424 slugging percentage, nine home runs and 34 RBIs in 74 games for San Francisco this season. He remains under team control beyond 2026 and will become arbitration-eligible after the season.

The more dramatic Tuesday development is coming from inside the organization. The Yankees are promoting 21-year-old shortstop George Lombard Jr., their No. 1 prospect and MLB Pipeline’s No. 20 prospect overall, for the game against St. Louis. Anthony Volpe was optioned to Triple-A after Monday’s loss.

Lombard hit .268 with a .405 on-base percentage and .440 slugging percentage across 56 Triple-A games. Since returning from the injured list in mid-July, he had raised his level, batting .377 with a 1.081 OPS in 14 games.

Together, the Ramos trade and Lombard promotion show how New York is trying to cover an offense missing Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton. The club added Luis García Jr. earlier in the deadline period but did not land a catcher or a high-leverage reliever. That places more pressure on matchups, returning injured players and the immediate readiness of its top prospect.

This is a post-deadline update, separate from Monday’s Orioles and Tarik Skubal coverage. MLB.com reported the Ramos trade details and the Lombard promotion.
