OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Baltimore Ravens received a major defensive boost Wednesday morning when two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike passed his physical, came off the physically unable to perform list and returned to the practice field.

Madubuike’s return came on the first day of Baltimore’s 2026 training camp at the Under Armour Performance Center in Owings Mills. The development gives the Ravens their clearest sign yet that one of the defense’s most important players is progressing toward an NFL comeback.

The Ravens confirmed that Madubuike participated in the team’s opening stretches and warmups before moving to a separate area for individual conditioning work. He did not immediately participate in full-team drills.

Ravens plan a cautious return

Head coach Jesse Minter said Baltimore will continue protecting Madubuike as the defensive lineman works his way back into football condition.

Madubuike established himself among the NFL’s top defensive tackles during a breakout 2023 campaign, leading all defensive linemen with 13 sacks. He followed that performance with 6.5 sacks in 2024 and earned consecutive Pro Bowl selections.

His ability to create pressure from the interior forces opposing quarterbacks to move off their spots and can create more favorable matchups for Baltimore’s edge rushers. His presence also reduces the amount of time the Ravens’ defensive backs must remain in coverage.

If his recovery continues without a setback, Madubuike could rejoin a defensive front featuring Travis Jones and veteran Calais Campbell.

Safety Kyle Hamilton described Madubuike as one of the NFL’s most talented players at his position, while quarterback Lamar Jackson said the defensive tackle’s return would also help Baltimore’s secondary.

What happens next?

The Ravens are expected to increase Madubuike’s workload gradually instead of immediately placing him into full-contact periods.

Baltimore’s medical and coaching staffs will monitor how his neck and body respond as he progresses from conditioning and individual drills to position work and, eventually, team practice.

No timetable has been announced for his full return.

Still, seeing Madubuike back in uniform represents an encouraging opening-day development for a Ravens team looking to return to the postseason under Minter.
