Patrick Mahomes Returns to Full Participation After Major Knee Surgery

Patrick Mahomes returning to quarterback drills during professional football training camp.

Patrick Mahomes has been cleared for full participation as the Kansas City Chiefs begin training camp.

The quarterback is returning approximately seven months after undergoing surgery to repair ACL and LCL tears in his left knee. Chiefs coach Andy Reid confirmed that Mahomes can take part in the complete camp program, although the team will continue monitoring his workload and recovery.

The clearance is one of the NFL’s most significant training-camp developments.

Kansas City’s championship expectations depend heavily on whether Mahomes can move naturally, protect himself and regain confidence in the repaired knee before the regular season.

A medical clearance does not mean the rehabilitation is complete.

Training camp introduces live movement, collapsing pockets and unpredictable defensive pressure that cannot be completely recreated during individual rehabilitation work. The Chiefs must evaluate how the knee responds across consecutive practices rather than one successful session.

Mahomes is expected to begin camp wearing a brace.

The team’s goal is to have him prepared for the scheduled season opener against Denver on September 14, but Reid said the recovery will continue to be handled incrementally.

The injury followed the most difficult statistical season of Mahomes’ career. He finished with career lows in passing yards and touchdowns as Kansas City missed the postseason.

That creates two connected questions.

Is Mahomes physically prepared to return, and has Kansas City improved enough around him to prevent the offense from depending on constant improvisation?

The Chiefs will need reliable protection, separation from the receiving group and a running game capable of reducing unnecessary contact on their quarterback.

PowerPage Analysis

Mahomes being cleared is excellent news for Kansas City.

The more important evidence will come after several weeks of practice, when the Chiefs can evaluate mobility, recovery between sessions and his comfort under pressure.
