Orioles Erase Seven-Run Deficit in Wild 12-Inning Comeback Against Detroit

Colton Cowser celebrates after driving in the winning run during an Orioles comeback.

The Baltimore Orioles followed one of their most difficult losses of the season with one of their most dramatic victories.

Baltimore rallied from a seven-run deficit Wednesday to defeat the Detroit Tigers 10–9 in 12 innings. Colton Cowser delivered the tiebreaking single in the top of the 12th, completing the Orioles’ biggest comeback since 2009.

The Orioles trailed 7–0 after six innings and appeared headed toward another disappointing result following Tuesday’s 14–0 defeat. Baltimore scored five runs in the seventh inning and two more in the eighth to tie the game.

Detroit briefly responded during extra innings, but the Orioles continued answering. Cowser’s 12th-inning hit finally gave Baltimore a lead it was able to protect.

The comeback spoiled what could have been Tarik Skubal’s final home appearance with the Tigers before the trade deadline. The Detroit ace recorded his 1,000th career strikeout and exited with a six-run advantage before the bullpen allowed Baltimore to take control.

A Needed Response

The victory was especially important because of how decisively Baltimore had been beaten one night earlier.

The Orioles remain in a complicated position ahead of the August 3 trade deadline, but the win demonstrated that the club is still capable of producing the kind of sustained at-bats and late-game pressure needed to remain competitive.

Baltimore now turns its attention toward an important weekend series as the front office evaluates whether to add to the roster, trade veterans or attempt a combination of both approaches.
