Adley Rutschman Starts His Boston Chapter as Orioles Begin Their Post-Deadline Sprint

Adley Rutschman has reported to Boston, beginning a new chapter less than two days after the Orioles traded the former No. 1 overall pick to an American League East rival.

The deal sent Rutschman and catcher Jake Rogers to the Red Sox. Baltimore received catcher Carlos Narváez, pitching prospects Anthony Eyanson and Kyson Witherspoon, outfield prospect Enddy Azocar, plus a player to be named later or cash considerations. Three of the returning prospects ranked among Boston’s top five in MLB Pipeline’s system at the time of the trade.

Rutschman called the transition emotional as he arrived at Fenway Park. He is currently on the injured list with left wrist inflammation but has started a swing program and said the wrist is feeling good. Boston assigned him No. 31 because Garrett Crochet wears the No. 35 Rutschman used in Baltimore.

For Orioles fans, the trade closes the central chapter of the franchise’s rebuild. Rutschman’s 2022 arrival helped accelerate Baltimore’s return to contention, and his move within the division makes the separation even sharper. He is under club control through 2027, giving Boston more than a two-month rental.

Baltimore’s front office is resisting the word “rebuild.” President of baseball operations Mike Elias said the Orioles remain prepared to compete, even after dealing Rutschman and several other established players. The team backed that message Tuesday night with a 3–1 win over the Angels, improving to 55–58 and moving within 1½ games of the final American League Wild Card position.

The Orioles now face a difficult test: prove that the prospect return and expanded system depth can coexist with a real 2026 playoff chase. Rutschman, meanwhile, joins a Boston club that has surged into contention and expects him to become a major two-way addition once healthy.
