The Samuel Basallo return gives the Orioles an important middle-of-the-order bat as Baltimore tries to stay connected to the American League Wild Card race. The club reinstated Basallo from the 10-day injured list on August 19, 2026, after he missed four weeks with right shoulder inflammation. He was placed at first base and in the cleanup spot against the New York Yankees at Camden Yards.
Baltimore optioned Jeremiah Jackson to Triple-A Norfolk in the corresponding move. With Basallo active, the Orioles carried three catchers: Basallo, Carlos Narváez, and Yohel Pozo. Using Basallo at first base offered a way to return his left-handed power to the lineup while managing the demands placed on his shoulder behind the plate.
Before the injury, Basallo was batting .241 with nine doubles, one triple, 16 home runs, 46 RBIs, and a .756 OPS in 86 games. Those numbers made his absence especially noticeable for an offense trying to produce consistently during the second half of the season. Baltimore entered the night 61–65, close enough to the Wild Card field for every healthy impact hitter to matter.
Basallo tested the shoulder during a brief rehabilitation assignment. He caught seven innings for Triple-A Norfolk on August 16 and went 1-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. He then played nine innings at first base for Double-A Chesapeake on August 18, finishing 0-for-5. The progression cleared the way for his return to the major league roster.
MLB.com’s official Orioles report confirmed the move and Basallo’s rehabilitation details. PowerPage readers can also revisit Baltimore’s August 12 game coverage for recent Orioles context. The transaction does not solve every offensive question, but it restores one of the organization’s most dangerous young bats at a point when the margin for a postseason push is narrowing.
