Watch Ride or Die for Friendship, Assassins and Octavia Spencer in Action Mode

Tonight’s recommendation is technically a preview for midnight: Ride or Die arrives on Prime Video July 15.

The series stars Octavia Spencer and Hannah Waddingham as best friends Debbie and Judith. Their relationship changes dramatically when Debbie discovers that Judith is secretly an international assassin. A figure from Judith’s past and a failed hit force both women onto the run.

The premise works because the action is built around a relationship rather than replacing it.

Spencer and Waddingham are both performers capable of moving between humor, emotional vulnerability and authority. That makes the friendship more promising than the usual pairing of one highly trained operative with an ordinary civilian whose only function is panic.

The stronger possibility is that each woman understands the other less completely than she believed.
