Maryland men’s basketball is bringing a historic rivalry to Baltimore.
The Terrapins will face South Carolina on Saturday, December 19, at CFG Bank Arena. The matchup will be the first meeting between the programs since the 2005 National Invitation Tournament semifinals and their first-ever game against each other in Baltimore.
Maryland leads the all-time series 31–27. The programs first met in 1925 and later competed as conference opponents in both the Southern Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference.
One of their most memorable games came in 1971, when Maryland defeated second-ranked South Carolina 31–30 in overtime at Cole Field House. Jim O’Brien’s buzzer-beating jumper completed a six-point Maryland surge during the final 14 seconds.
The Baltimore game also provides Maryland with an opportunity to strengthen its connection with fans and prospective players outside College Park. CFG Bank Arena has increasingly become a destination for major basketball events, concerts and entertainment programming.
Tipoff time, television coverage and individual ticket information have not yet been announced.
The contest joins a Maryland nonconference schedule that already includes Georgetown on November 7, Virginia on November 13 and Tennessee in the Players Era Tournament on November 24. The program will also spend the season celebrating the 25th anniversary of its 2002 national championship.
