Jaafar Jackson Lands His First Post-Michael Role Opposite Will Smith

Jaafar Jackson will join Will Smith and AnnaSophia Robb in Supermax.

Jaafar Jackson is moving from a family legacy story into an original action thriller.

The actor has joined Will Smith and AnnaSophia Robb in Supermax, an upcoming Amazon MGM Studios film scheduled to stream worldwide on Prime Video. The casting marks Jackson’s first announced screen role after portraying his uncle Michael Jackson in the biopic Michael.

Smith and Robb will play FBI agents investigating a murder inside what the project describes as the world’s most secure prison. Jackson’s role has not been disclosed, and the production has not announced a release date.

David Gordon Green is directing from a screenplay by David Weil and David J. Rosen. The writers are also executive producers, while Smith and Adam Fishbach are producing through Westbrook. Filming is expected to begin in mid-August.

The move is important because Jackson’s first performance arrived with unusual advantages and pressure. Physical resemblance, family access and intimate knowledge could help him portray Michael Jackson, but those same connections made it difficult for audiences to separate the actor from the person he was depicting.

Supermax gives him a different test. An original character will require Jackson to establish screen presence without relying on imitation or a familiar musical catalog. Working opposite Smith also places him beside a performer whose career has moved across comedy, drama and action for more than three decades.

The production should be allowed to define Jackson’s part before conclusions are drawn. His character name, function in the story and amount of screen time remain unconfirmed. What is clear is that the next step has come quickly—and that he is choosing a genre far removed from the musical biopic that introduced him.

For Jackson, the opportunity is larger than proving that Michael was not a one-time performance. It is a chance to begin building an acting identity that can exist beside the Jackson name without being limited to it.
