The Devil Wears Prada 2 Moves From Theaters to Streaming This Week

A sophisticated New York fashion newsroom transitioning from print publishing into the streaming era.

One of the year’s most commercially successful sequels is moving from theaters into the streaming phase of its release.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 arrives Wednesday, July 29, on Hulu and Disney+. The film reunites Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci and has earned more than $688 million worldwide.

The streaming release extends the sequel’s value into a second audience cycle.

The theatrical campaign depended heavily on recognition: the cast, the fashion-world setting and the cultural memory surrounding the original film. Streaming can reach viewers who were interested but did not purchase a theater ticket, as well as audiences revisiting the first film before watching the sequel.

The story returns to the world of Runway, with Andy Sachs coming back into Miranda Priestly’s professional orbit as the publication faces an unstable media economy.

That premise gives the sequel a stronger reason to exist than nostalgia alone.

The original film was built around the power of print fashion media at a time when magazines could define trends, careers and celebrity access. The sequel can examine what happens when that authority is challenged by digital platforms, creator media, direct-to-consumer brands and shrinking traditional publishing businesses.

Streaming is also part of that story.

A movie about the decline and reinvention of legacy media is now entering homes through the platforms that helped reorganize the entertainment business.

PowerPage Analysis

The sequel’s box-office success confirms that audiences still respond to recognizable worlds when the returning cast and central idea remain strong.

Its streaming performance will show whether that interest can become repeated viewing rather than one theatrical event.
