Cooper Flagg is giving Dallas more than a scoring centerpiece early in his second NBA season. The 19-year-old forward is averaging 25.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 6.5 assists entering Wednesday, November 4, according to NBA.com’s assessment of his development.

The most consequential part of that start may be the combination of scoring and decision-making. Shaun Powell’s NBA.com feature describes Flagg becoming more comfortable reading defensive help and moving the ball. He leads Dallas in assists, expanding the ways he can influence a possession when opponents send extra attention his way.

Kyrie Irving’s return gives that development another dimension. NBA.com reports that Irving is averaging 21 points following his recovery from knee surgery. Dallas is 4–3 overall and 4–1 in games featuring both Irving and Flagg, an encouraging early sample rather than a settled verdict on the partnership.

There have been difficult nights, too. Flagg shot 3-for-19 against Sacramento on Monday. Including that performance in the picture is important: a strong opening stretch does not mean every matchup has been solved, especially for a player still learning to carry a larger share of an NBA offense.

The league’s Wednesday briefing places the next test in San Antonio, where the Spurs host the Mavericks at 9:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPN. San Antonio enters on a five-game winning streak. The matchup offers another opportunity to examine Flagg’s progress against a team built around Victor Wembanyama.

For Dallas, the broader value is flexibility. A young forward who can score and create for teammates gives the organization more ways to construct lineups around him. That is an assessment of the skills on display, not a prediction that the Mavericks have already established a postseason destination.

The immediate story is a developing partnership and a wider offensive role. Whether Dallas keeps building on that start will require more than a handful of results, but Flagg has supplied a clear point of focus.
