Busta Rhymes Sets August 25 for J Dilla-Produced Dillagence 2

Busta Rhymes has set Dillagence 2 for August 25.

Busta Rhymes has put a date on one of the most closely watched producer-vault projects in Hip-Hop. Dillagence 2 is scheduled for August 25 and will be built entirely around unreleased production from the late J Dilla.

The album follows the 2007 mixtape Dillagence, hosted by Mick Boogie, which paired Busta’s elastic delivery with Dilla’s drums and off-center swing. The sequel is not being presented as a loose tribute compilation. Busta’s announcement frames it as the continuation of a creative relationship that ran through records including “Still Shining,” “Turn Me Up Some” and “Show Me What You Got.”

The announcement arrived with footage of Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancey, Dilla’s mother, listening to material from the project. That visual matters because posthumous releases require more than access to hard drives: listeners also look for evidence that the work is being handled with care and with the artist’s legacy in mind.

Busta previously said Dilla left him more than 300 beats before the producer’s death in 2006. Early listening-session reports have also pointed to a Lil Wayne appearance, but a complete official track list has not been released. PowerPage will treat any additional guest list as unconfirmed until Busta or the project’s representatives publish it.

For listeners, Dillagence 2 carries two expectations at once. It has to function as a new Busta Rhymes album, not simply an archive exercise, while also preserving the feel and intention of production created years earlier. The August 25 release will show how he balances both responsibilities.
