Robert De Niro’s “The Whisper Man” Brings a Family Mystery to Netflix

A missing child forces three generations of a fractured family into the same nightmare in “The Whisper Man,” now streaming on Netflix. Robert De Niro, Adam Scott and Michelle Monaghan lead the crime thriller, which adapts Alex North's bestselling novel without hiding the emotional engine beneath its serial-killer setup.
Scott plays Tom Kennedy, a widowed crime writer whose eight-year-old son, Jake, is abducted. The disappearance pushes Tom toward his estranged father, Pete, a retired detective played by De Niro. Pete once captured the murderer known as the Whisper Man, but the imprisoned killer cannot easily explain why a new case appears to carry the same signature.
The official trailer builds tension through voices, doors and half-seen movement instead of giving away the answer. Michelle Monaghan's Detective Amanda Beck joins the search as father and son confront years of distance. The mystery asks whether the current threat is an imitator, a hidden accomplice or something connected to what the original investigation missed.
Director James Ashcroft has emphasized that the relationships drew him to the material. That focus keeps the movie from becoming only a puzzle about a notorious criminal. Tom is trying to recover his child while deciding whether he can trust the father he stopped leaning on long ago. Pete is solving a case while facing what his work cost his own family.
The Whisper Man Netflix release runs one hour and 54 minutes and is rated R. Netflix classifies it as a mystery and psychological thriller. Viewers sensitive to stories involving child abduction or serial violence should know that those elements are central to the premise, even when the film's deepest conflict is emotional.
