Coby Mayo gave the Orioles’ wild-card chase fresh life Monday afternoon at Camden Yards. Mayo homered twice, Trevor Rogers carried a one-run start into the eighth inning and Baltimore beat Cleveland, 6-4, ending a six-game losing streak at the moment the season could least afford another slide.

Baltimore entered the series opener four games behind Cleveland for the final American League Wild Card position with 18 games remaining. The win moved the Orioles to 70-75 and trimmed that gap to three games, although Toronto and Texas remain part of the crowded race. The odds are still demanding, but the path no longer feels completely abstract.

Mayo supplied the loudest swings. His first home run traveled 426 feet to left and became his 20th of the season. He went deep again in the sixth for No. 21, finishing with three runs batted in. The two-homer performance gave a lineup that had scored only once across its previous three games the force it had been missing.

Rogers made the advantage stand. The left-hander allowed one run on six hits over a season-high 7 1/3 innings, struck out six and did not issue a walk. Cleveland finally created late pressure with three runs in the ninth, but Josh Walker closed the final two outs for his first save of the season.

The series carries more than day-to-day momentum. Cleveland still leads the season series 3-2, which means a Baltimore sweep would also give the Orioles a potentially valuable head-to-head tiebreaker. Games Tuesday and Wednesday now offer a direct chance to pull closer rather than hoping for help elsewhere.

Baltimore’s recent Camden Yards series against Boston showed how quickly September margins can disappear. Monday offered the needed response: a starter working deep, a young power hitter changing the scoreboard and just enough bullpen execution to finish. One win does not erase six losses, but it keeps the math alive and makes the next pitch matter again.
