Adley Rutschman Returns to Camden Yards as a Red Sox Opponent

Adley Rutschman returns to Camden Yards on Thursday night in a position Baltimore fans had not seen before: wearing a Boston Red Sox uniform. The former Orioles catcher is in Boston’s starting lineup, batting third and catching, for the opener of a four-game series that carries both emotion and American League Wild Card weight.

The appearance was not automatic. Rutschman missed Boston’s previous three games because of discomfort in a hyperextended right elbow. The Red Sox have described the issue as something that may require continued management, but Thursday’s lineup confirms he is ready to start his first game at Camden Yards since Baltimore traded him on August 3.

Rutschman played 283 games at Camden Yards as an Oriole and became one of the central figures in the club’s return to contention. Boston acquired him with catcher Jake Rogers and cash for Carlos Narváez, three prospects and a player to be named later or cash. The deal shifted a familiar face directly into the AL East race.

That race sharpens the reunion. Boston entered Thursday at 75–65 and held the second AL Wild Card position, while Baltimore began the night 69–71. The clubs had split their first 10 meetings, making this four-game set important for the season series and any potential head-to-head tiebreaker.

Rookie left-hander Jake Bennett is scheduled to start for Boston against Orioles right-hander Brandon Young. The first pitch is set for 7:15 p.m. Eastern on FOX and FOX ONE. Baltimore returns home after a 6–5, 11-inning loss in Colorado, where two late leads slipped away despite Trevor Rogers’ 11 strikeouts.

The Orioles’ September schedule leaves little room for sentimental pauses. Every remaining opponent entered the month with a postseason path, and 13 of Baltimore’s final 22 games were against AL East teams. Rutschman’s homecoming will command attention, but the standings demand something more practical: Baltimore needs to win the series in front of it.

For one night, the player who helped change expectations at Camden Yards becomes part of the opposition trying to end Baltimore’s season. The reception will tell its own story. What follows after the first pitch will matter much longer.
