The official trailer presents their alliance as necessary, volatile and morally dangerous.
Abdul-Mateen plays a young Black FBI agent sent south to investigate a wave of brutal killings targeting civil-rights leaders. The assignment places him inside an institution with its own limits and compromises. Wahlberg plays Greg Scarpa, a notorious mafia hitman whose methods sit far outside the law the agent is supposed to represent.
The phrase at the center of the campaign—when the system is broken, break the rules—sets up the film's main conflict. One man is trying to force accountability through federal authority. The other understands violence as leverage. Their shared target does not erase the racial, professional and ethical distance between them.
The official Paramount trailer leans into that collision. Abdul-Mateen's controlled performance is framed against intimidation, church violence, nighttime raids and Wahlberg's blunt menace. The black-and-yellow campaign art keeps the two men visually divided even when the story requires them to work side by side.
That balance will determine whether the film can carry its premise. A story built around murdered civil-rights leaders cannot treat history as decoration for a conventional buddy thriller. Abdul-Mateen's character needs interior stakes as clear as the danger, while Scarpa's presence has to complicate the investigation rather than eclipse the people whose deaths drive it.
