Baltimore educators have a free after-school museum outing on the calendar for Thursday, October 22nd. The Baltimore Museum of Art’s Flashback Teacher Night runs from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., connecting teachers with the museum’s exhibition about Baltimore photography. Registration is required, so this is an evening to plan ahead for rather than assume walk-in admission.

The BMA’s program announcement invites educators across disciplines to explore the exhibition, meet other teachers and take part in hands-on creativity. Classroom resources are part of the evening’s focus. The program gives local teachers a way to connect art with the people, places and histories their students encounter beyond school.

Baltimore through the camera

Flashback: A Century of Photography in Baltimore is open through February 21st, 2027. The museum’s exhibition overview describes more than 200 works spanning approximately 185 years, tracing photography through studios, neighborhoods and public life. The scope makes room for both artistic experimentation and the camera’s role in recording a changing city.

The lineup includes photographers such as A. Aubrey Bodine, Elinor Cahn, Roland Freeman and Robert Houston, alongside contemporary voices including Devin Allen, Kei Ito and SHAN Wallace. Rather than treating Baltimore as a single backdrop, that range offers different ways of looking at community, identity and the everyday details that become historical evidence.

The exhibition also incorporates a Reading Room with a soundtrack curated by Ultra Naté, the BMA’s composer-in-residence, plus an audio guide and activities that encourage closer observation. For educators, those approaches suggest connections across visual art, writing, social studies and music. A photograph can become the starting point for asking whose perspective is visible and what falls outside the frame.

Plan your visit

Teacher Night takes place at the BMA, 10 Art Museum Drive in Baltimore. Use the museum’s events calendar to find registration and check the latest visitor information before leaving. The free admission described here is for this educator program; it should not be taken as a blanket statement about regular exhibition ticketing. Bring time to look closely, exchange ideas and consider which images could open a classroom conversation.
