Strong to Severe Storms Threaten the Baltimore Region Tuesday

Dark storm clouds and heavy rain approaching the Baltimore skyline.

Residents across Baltimore and Central Maryland should remain weather-aware Tuesday as strong thunderstorms move through the region.

Forecast coverage indicates that some storms could become severe, bringing the possibility of damaging wind gusts, heavy rainfall and an isolated tornado.

The greatest concern with fast-moving summer storms is that conditions can change quickly. Areas that begin the afternoon with heat and sunshine may experience intense rain, lightning or strong winds with limited notice.

People traveling during the afternoon and evening should be prepared for reduced visibility, standing water and possible delays. Never attempt to drive through a flooded roadway, even when the water appears shallow.

Outdoor furniture, trash containers and other unsecured objects should be brought inside or secured. Residents should also keep phones charged and enable emergency notifications in case warnings are issued.

Anyone attending an outdoor event should identify a substantial indoor shelter before storms arrive. Vehicles, tents, covered patios and isolated trees do not provide adequate protection from severe weather or lightning.

Basic Weather Precautions

Monitor official watches and warnings throughout the afternoon.

Move indoors when thunder is audible.

Avoid flooded streets and low-lying roadways.

Keep mobile devices charged.

Check on relatives or neighbors who may need assistance.
