Baltimore County Schools Open Today: Bus Tools and Key Dates for Families

Baltimore County schools open Monday, August 31, for students in grades 1–12, starting a new school year and a new morning routine for families across the county. Kindergarten follows a different schedule: the first full day, including kindergarten transportation, is Wednesday, September 2.

The most useful first-week check is your child’s current bus assignment. BCPS directs families to the Focus parent portal for the latest stop, pickup time, and trip name. Check the current entry rather than relying on a saved screenshot or last year’s routine; the district specifically asks families to review Focus regularly.

BCPS’s back-to-school update asks students to reach their assigned bus stop at least 10 minutes before the scheduled pickup. Families can also use BusWhere to follow their child’s bus and receive estimated arrival information. These tools serve different purposes: Focus supplies the assignment, while BusWhere helps with the trip itself.

For substitutions or delays, use the district’s Transportation Status page. BCPS organizes the information by school and cautions that posted conditions can change. The district says changes that arise after service begins will be communicated to the school as they become known. Transportation questions can be directed to 443-809-4321.

There is an important distinction here: this is Baltimore County Public Schools’ opening date, not a single calendar for every school system in the Baltimore area. Families with children in different systems should follow each child’s school calendar, and kindergarten families should confirm any school-specific arrangements before Wednesday’s first full day.

The Back2BCPS family checklist also asks parents and guardians to complete their child’s Student Emergency Information Form in Focus or through the home school. Keep contact information current so the school can reach the right adult about closings, illness, or other important updates. The district’s hub also links its calendar and student handbooks.
