A24's “Backrooms” Sets Its HBO Max Streaming Date

The internet's endless yellow maze is moving into a new viewing window. A24's “Backrooms” begins streaming exclusively in the United States on HBO Max Friday, September 25, with an HBO television premiere following Saturday, September 26, at 8 p.m. ET. The newly announced Backrooms HBO Max streaming date gives viewers a home option for one of the year's biggest examples of online horror becoming studio-scale filmmaking.

Chiwetel Ejiofor stars as Clark, a furniture-store owner whose basement contains a doorway into a dimension of connected rooms where normal time and space no longer apply. Renate Reinsve plays Dr. Mary Kline, the therapist pulled into the unknown after Clark disappears. Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett and Lukita Maxwell round out the principal cast.

Director Kane Parsons arrived at the feature through the short films he released online as Kane Pixels. Those videos turned fluorescent lights, dated carpeting and empty office architecture into a language of dread. The official A24 trailer keeps that visual identity while widening the story around characters who must decide whether the maze is a place, an infection or a trap designed to imitate familiarity.

The adaptation's strongest idea remains simple: ordinary spaces become threatening when their purpose disappears. A hallway, showroom or waiting room is supposed to lead somewhere. In “Backrooms,” repetition removes that promise. The result is horror built less on a single monster than on the fear that the environment itself cannot be solved.

Parsons directs from a screenplay by Will Soodik. James Wan, Michael Clear, Roberto Patino, Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen, Dan Levine, Osgood Perkins, Chris Ferguson, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping and Kori Adelson are credited as producers, connecting the internet-born concept to an unusually deep genre team.
