50 Cent’s Balrog Steps Into the New “Street Fighter” Trailer

50 Cent’s Balrog is stepping into the spotlight as “Street Fighter” turns up its fall movie campaign. Paramount Pictures and Legendary released a new trailer on September 1, putting the rapper’s boxing character inside a crowded, colorful battle ahead of the film’s October 16 theatrical opening.

The official cast listing confirms Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as Balrog. Andrew Koji plays Ryu, Noah Centineo is Ken Masters, and Callina Liang takes on Chun-Li. Director Kitao Sakurai’s version sets the action in 1993, with Chun-Li drawing the estranged Ryu and Ken into the World Warrior Tournament.

That reunion comes with a trap. Paramount’s synopsis describes a conspiracy behind the tournament that pushes the fighters into conflict with each other as well as their own pasts. It gives the film a relationship to build around, even as the trailer sells the larger spectacle of a familiar game roster coming to life.

And the roster is part of the attraction. Cody Rhodes appears as Guile, Roman Reigns as Akuma and Jason Momoa as Blanka. The mix of actors, wrestling personalities and 50 Cent makes this a crossover event before anyone throws the first punch. The challenge for the finished movie will be turning those recognizable entrances into characters worth following.
