Denzel Washington’s turn in “Gladiator II” is heading to Netflix alongside the film that started the story. Netflix’s October calendar lists both “Gladiator” and “Gladiator II” for October 21st, giving viewers a two-film option for their midweek watchlist.

The new arrival is a Netflix catalog addition, not a new movie premiere. Ridley Scott’s sequel originally reached theaters in 2024, while the original film dates to 2000. Bringing the pair to the same service makes it easier to revisit the earlier story before moving into its next generation.

Two chapters of the same Roman saga

The original follows Maximus, played by Russell Crowe, a Roman general forced into slavery after Commodus destroys his family and position. Paramount’s film guide describes his return to Rome as a gladiator determined to confront the emperor. Joaquin Phoenix plays Commodus, with Connie Nielsen as Lucilla.

“Gladiator II” shifts the central role to Lucius, played by Paul Mescal. After his home is conquered, he enters the Colosseum while Rome is controlled by brutal rulers. Washington plays Macrinus; the cast also includes Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Derek Jacobi and Nielsen.

That makes the double arrival useful for two different audiences: viewers who know the original but missed the sequel, and newcomers who want to begin with Maximus before following Lucius. Watching in release order gives the returning names and family connections their earlier context without needing to read a plot summary first.

Paramount’s official “Gladiator II” trailer is embedded below for a look at the cast and arena setting. The studio rates the sequel R for strong bloody violence, so this is an adult action-drama choice rather than a family movie-night pick.

Check Netflix’s title listing in your account when the films arrive October 21st; streaming catalogs can differ by location. For readers building a watchlist, the immediate draw is straightforward: the original epic and Washington’s role in its sequel become available together on Netflix’s announced schedule.
