Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s “By Any Means” Brings a Civil Rights Crime Thriller to Theaters

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s “By Any Means” arrives in theaters Friday, September 4, with a crime-thriller premise built around a broken system and an alliance that should not work. Abdul-Mateen plays a young Black FBI agent sent into 1960s Mississippi to investigate killings targeting civil rights leaders.

The case pushes him beside Greg Scarpa, the notorious mob hitman played by Mark Wahlberg. Paramount’s official synopsis presents the pair as men divided by nearly everything but forced toward the same conclusion: ordinary rules may not produce justice when the institutions responsible for enforcing them are part of the problem.

That tension gives the movie more to carry than a standard mismatched-partners setup. Abdul-Mateen’s agent represents a federal system that has sent him into danger while limiting what he can do. Scarpa represents violence and criminal power outside that system. Their cooperation raises the question of what justice becomes when every available method is compromised.

The film is inspired by a true story, but that phrase should not be mistaken for a documentary guarantee. Elegance Bratton directs the period thriller, and the official trailer emphasizes suspense, pursuit and moral conflict. Viewers interested in the history behind the premise should treat the movie as dramatization and seek out nonfiction reporting separately.

The September 4 opening places “By Any Means” at the front of a busy fall movie calendar. The Associated Press includes the Paramount release among the month’s first major arrivals, while the studio’s film page confirms that this is currently a theatrical release rather than a same-day streaming launch.

Abdul-Mateen’s presence makes the story especially relevant for audiences following Black-led genre filmmaking. The trailer gives his agent authority, fear and calculation without reducing him to a sidekick in Scarpa’s world. It also keeps the civil rights murders—not simply the unlikely partnership—at the center of the stakes.
