Vernon Davis Returns for Maryland Homecoming as Son Jianni Builds His Own Legacy
Updated: 45 minutes ago

Vernon Davis is returning to Maryland’s Homecoming with a role beyond former star: grand marshal and football parent. His son Jianni is now a freshman running back for the Terps, giving the family another connection to College Park as Maryland prepares to welcome Rutgers on Saturday, October 17th.
A shared school, an independent choice
In Maryland’s new Davis family feature, Jianni describes choosing the university for his own reasons, including his relationship with coach Michael Locksley and the feeling he had during his official visit. Vernon supported the decision without insisting his son follow the same college path.
The two play different positions. Vernon built his career at tight end, while Jianni is starting at running back. Their conversations still connect through offensive football, with the father offering guidance and the son establishing his own identity. Jianni scored in his first collegiate game, a moment Vernon watched with family and celebrated with obvious pride.
Homecoming reaches across generations
Vernon’s return links the celebration of Maryland’s past with a player just beginning his college career. The university inducted him into its athletics Hall of Fame in 2022. This weekend, his grand marshal role brings that history into a Homecoming whose meaning is also personal.
Saturday’s game details
Maryland’s official game preview lists a 12:30 p.m. ET kickoff against Rutgers at SECU Stadium, with television coverage on Big Ten Network and audio on the Maryland Sports Radio Network. The Terps enter at 2–4 overall and 0–3 in the Big Ten; Rutgers is 1–4 and 0–2.
The Homecoming program includes the traditional Red Out and recognition of Maryland’s 2026 athletics Hall of Fame class. The first 10,000 fans are scheduled to receive a Retro Red Out rally towel. For returning alumni, the afternoon combines familiar traditions with the chance to meet the next generation of Terps.
Our earlier Rutgers preview covers the competitive matchup. The Davis family’s story supplies another reason this Homecoming matters: one Maryland career being celebrated while another takes shape.
