UMG and ElevenLabs Plan a Licensed AI Music Platform for Fan Remixes

Universal Music Group and ElevenLabs are developing an AI music platform that would let fans work with tracks from participating artists. Their September 10 announcement describes a multiyear licensing agreement and a wider collaboration on audio products for artists and songwriters.

According to UMG, the planned fan tools include remixes, mashups, new interpretations of songs and personalized vocal experiences. The company describes licensed music and artist participation as the foundation of the service. It is still in development, so the announcement should not be read as a public launch or a claim that every UMG recording will be available.

ElevenLabs says the platform will be offered separately from its existing music products. Those include its Music API for businesses and developers, and ElevenMusic, an app for creating and editing original songs. A subscription to an existing product therefore should not be assumed to include the future UMG service; the announcement does not establish that entitlement.

For Hip-Hop and R&B listeners, the proposed remix tools are the most direct point of interest. The practical questions are which artists choose to participate, which recordings become available and what users can do with the finished results. The companies’ statements do not provide a named artist roster, consumer price, public launch date or detailed terms for sharing creations.

Both companies present creator compensation as a goal. That is their stated intention, while the public announcement leaves the payment formula and individual participation arrangements unspecified.
