Late-night drivers using I-895 through Baltimore should allow extra time on Thursday, October 8th. The Maryland Transportation Authority has scheduled a southbound Harbor Tunnel closure beginning at 9 p.m., with reopening planned for 3 a.m. on Friday, October 9th.

According to MDTA’s maintenance advisory, both directions will share the northbound tunnel during the work. That arrangement leaves one lane available in each direction. The crossing remains open under the planned configuration, but drivers will encounter a different traffic pattern from normal overnight operations.

MDTA warns of possible delays of 15 to 20 minutes while crews establish two-way traffic. That estimate applies to the changeover; it is not a promise that every trip will take that much longer throughout the closure. Follow posted speeds and stay in your lane through the tunnel.

Thursday is the final evening listed in the October 5th–8th advisory. The schedule remains tentative: traffic volume, weather, emergency work or other priority closures can change the plan. Check the official notice again before leaving, especially if your trip falls near either end of the overnight window.

The Harbor Tunnel is the I-895 crossing beneath the Patapsco River. MDTA’s facility overview identifies the tunnel itself as a 1.4-mile, four-lane connection serving major north-south highways and Baltimore’s industrial areas; the tunnel and its approaches together extend approximately 18.5 miles.

The facility also has permanent vehicle restrictions. MDTA lists a maximum height of 13 feet, 6 inches and maximum width of 8 feet, prohibits double trailers, and restricts hazardous materials. Drivers of oversized vehicles or vehicles carrying regulated cargo should consult the facility rules before choosing the crossing.
