Trey Mancini will retire as an Oriole, bringing one of Baltimore's most meaningful baseball careers back to Camden Yards for a proper goodbye. The club announced Friday that Mancini will sign a one-day contract and be honored before the Sept. 19 game against Milwaukee.

The 4:05 p.m. game will include a pregame ceremony recognizing Mancini's playing career and his connection with the city. Baltimore selected him in the eighth round of the 2013 draft out of Notre Dame, and he reached the majors in September 2016. Across 701 games for the Orioles, he hit .270 with a .334 on-base percentage, a .463 slugging percentage and 117 home runs.

Those numbers explain only part of why the moment matters. Mancini missed the shortened 2020 season while undergoing treatment for Stage 3 colon cancer, then returned in 2021 to play 147 games and earn American League Comeback Player of the Year honors. His openness during that recovery made him a source of encouragement far beyond baseball.

Baltimore traded Mancini to Houston in 2022, and he finished that season as a World Series champion. He later appeared with the Cubs and Reds before stepping away from the majors. A brief 2026 return with the Angels — his first big-league action in 1,043 days — gave his playing career one final chapter.

The Orioles' recent finish in St. Louis showed how quickly the current season keeps moving, but this announcement creates space to recognize a player whose importance crosses eras. Mancini arrived during a difficult rebuilding period, became a fan favorite and returned from a life-altering diagnosis with uncommon perspective.

A one-day contract makes the paperwork match the relationship. The ceremony will let Mancini leave the game wearing the organization that drafted him, while Baltimore gets the chance to salute a career remembered as much for resilience and service as for home runs.
