Wes Moore Names Tony Bridges as Maryland’s Next MTA Administrator

Maryland’s public-transit system will soon have a new leader.

Governor Wes Moore has appointed former state delegate Tony Bridges as administrator of the Maryland Transit Administration, effective September 1. Bridges will succeed Holly Arnold, who stepped down after five years in the role.

Bridges currently serves as Moore’s deputy legislative officer. His previous experience includes service in the Maryland House of Delegates and a position as assistant secretary at the Maryland Department of Transportation.

The appointment puts Bridges in charge of the agency responsible for Baltimore’s bus, Metro SubwayLink and Light RailLink systems, along with MARC commuter rail, Mobility services and commuter buses operating throughout Maryland.

His arrival comes as riders continue to focus on reliability, safety, infrastructure improvements and the future of major transit initiatives. Those concerns are particularly important in Baltimore, where residents without consistent access to private vehicles depend on the MTA for employment, education, health care and daily services.

The transition also comes quickly: Moore announced the appointment one day after Arnold’s departure became public. Bridges’ combination of transportation and legislative experience could help the agency coordinate funding and policy priorities across the governor’s office, General Assembly and Maryland Department of Transportation.
