TheARTI$T is putting the work behind her voice into focus. In a YouKnowIGotSoul interview published October 16th, the Newark singer discusses vulnerability, layered background vocals and the lessons that helped shape her approach to contemporary R&B.

One key influence is producer Troy Taylor. She credits him with stressing the importance of harmonies and backgrounds, describing those layers as an essential source of color in her recordings. The conversation gives listeners a useful way into her music: pay attention to the supporting voices as well as the lead.

She also connects her sound to the feeling she finds in artists including Anthony Hamilton, Lauryn Hill and Jazmine Sullivan. Her emphasis is emotional communication. She says production must move her before she can record to it, and she treats personal growth as part of developing her musical identity.

That perspective extends to vulnerability. Rather than presenting openness as a temporary theme, she describes it as part of how she lives and writes. The interview also traces her path through basketball and teaching before committing to music, adding context to the person behind the songs.

Her earlier conversation with The Source, published September 18th, shows how that studio philosophy carries onto a stage. Discussing her support slot on Kehlani’s tour, she emphasized thoughtful arrangements and introducing herself to listeners who might be hearing her for the first time.

She described building a set around different emotions instead of staying with one mood. That is a useful distinction for an emerging artist: a short performance can introduce a range of experiences while still giving an unfamiliar audience a clear sense of who is singing to them.

The same interview connected her purple visual identity and fashion interests with her broader creative ambitions. Together, the two conversations show an artist thinking about the relationship between sound, performance and presentation. Watch the full YouKnowIGotSoul interview above to hear her explain that process in her own words.
