The Odyssey Becomes Christopher Nolan’s Biggest Movie and Sets an Imax Record

The Odyssey has reached $1.1 billion worldwide and a record $289 million from Imax screens.

The Odyssey has crossed two major commercial thresholds, becoming Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing film and the biggest global release in Imax history.

Variety reported Monday that the epic has reached $1.1 billion at the worldwide box office. Of that total, $289 million came from Imax screens, a format Nolan has championed throughout his career and one that became central to the film’s theatrical presentation.

The achievement places The Odyssey above every previous Nolan release in unadjusted worldwide grosses. It also shows how a filmmaker-specific brand can function like a franchise when audiences believe the theatrical format is part of the experience.

That distinction matters in a movie business still weighing the value of long exclusive theatrical windows against faster digital availability. The Odyssey did not need to be sold as an extension of an established superhero or action series. Its event status came from the director, the scale of the production, a recognizable cast and the promise that premium screens would materially change how the film looked and sounded.

The Imax figure may be the more consequential industry result. Premium large-format tickets carry higher prices, but the record also reflects sustained demand for specific auditoriums rather than simple opening-weekend curiosity.

For studios and theater owners, the lesson is not that every expensive film can reproduce Nolan’s model. It is that audiences will still make a theatrical appointment when the creative identity, release strategy and viewing format reinforce one another.
