Netflix’s newest thriller starts with a place that is supposed to feel safe. In The Last House, a family of four discovers that every exit from its home has been sealed by an unexplained force.
Greta Lee and Wagner Moura play the parents at the center of the PG-13 sci-fi film, with Gabriel Barbosa also among the cast. Louis Leterrier directs from a screenplay by Matthew Robinson. Netflix released the film August 7.
The premise is deliberately contained: the family has to manage food, water, fear and the strain of isolation while trying to understand what is keeping them inside. That gives the movie two layers of suspense. The external mystery drives the plot, but the immediate problem is whether ordinary people can organize themselves before dwindling resources and conflict do the damage first.
Netflix’s official description avoids overexplaining the threat, and viewers who want the twists intact should do the same. Early reviews have been mixed on the final payoff, but they generally identify the grounded family-survival setup and Moura’s performance as the movie’s strongest elements.
