Stefon Diggs Set to Join Commanders on Reported One-Year Contract

The Maryland native is expected to sign for up to $12 million and line up opposite Terry McLaurin.

Stefon Diggs is set to return to familiar territory. The Maryland native and former Terrapins receiver is expected to sign a one-year contract with the Washington Commanders worth up to $12 million, according to ESPN and NFL Network reports.

The move would place Diggs opposite Terry McLaurin and give quarterback Jayden Daniels another proven target. Washington improved the depth of its receiving group during the offseason, but Diggs adds a track record of high-volume production at the top of the rotation.

Diggs caught 85 passes for 1,013 yards last season with New England, producing his seventh 1,000-yard campaign in eight years. ESPN Research credited him with an 82.5% reception rate, the best among NFL wide receivers, and 2.77 yards per route run.

The regional connection is just as important to the story. Diggs was born in suburban Washington and played college football at Maryland before the Minnesota Vikings selected him in the fifth round of the 2015 draft. He attended Maryland’s first fall practice Wednesday and recorded a message supporting both the Terrapins and Commanders.

Washington is betting that the 32-year-old can still create separation and convert targets efficiently while reducing the coverage pressure on McLaurin. The reported one-year structure limits the long-term commitment and allows Diggs to reestablish his market close to home.

As of this edition, the strongest authoritative reports describe Diggs as set to sign; the Commanders had not published a formal transaction announcement in the sources reviewed. The agreement should therefore be treated as reported until the team completes and announces the roster move.
