Sparrows Point is set to become the focus of a major shipbuilding investment, with Anduril Industries planning a $3.7 billion facility at Tradepoint Atlantic. Maryland and Baltimore County announced the Arsenal-2 project October 6th, describing a two-million-square-foot shipyard intended to expand the nation’s submarine manufacturing capacity.

The state projects more than 3,100 permanent jobs and over 14,000 jobs supported directly or indirectly. Those figures describe anticipated economic effects, not positions already filled or thousands of vacancies currently available. Maryland officials also estimate more than $2 billion in annual economic output once the investment delivers its expected impact.

According to Anduril’s project announcement, initial operations are expected in 2030. The company says permitting and site preparation will begin immediately, with construction following required approvals. Production would then grow in stages as the workforce, supplier network and manufacturing infrastructure develop.

The funding figures require a careful distinction. Anduril’s $3.7 billion private investment is separate from a U.S. Navy contract valued at up to $2.9 billion. The company describes the Navy arrangement as performance-based and says the new capacity will support Virginia-class submarine production. The combined headline figure should not be read as $6.6 billion in private spending at Sparrows Point.

Maryland’s announcement says the state and county have committed to matching up to 13 percent of the anticipated private investment through existing incentives and proposed appropriations. New appropriations require approval from the Maryland General Assembly and Baltimore County Council. The package also includes support for a workforce-training Center of Excellence at a location still to be determined at or near Tradepoint Atlantic.

For residents, the next meaningful developments will be those approvals, construction milestones and specific training or hiring announcements. A large employment projection is a reason to watch the project closely, but it is not an application process. Workers and local businesses should use the official project and government announcements to distinguish confirmed opportunities from long-term forecasts.
