SoundCloud Acquires Nina Protocol and Makes a Play for Its Independent-Artist Community

SoundCloud has acquired the remaining assets of Nina Protocol, bringing the independent music platform’s archive and artist community into a much larger creator ecosystem.

Nina Protocol was built as an alternative to conventional streaming. The blockchain-based platform allowed independent artists to distribute and sell music directly to listeners while retaining ownership and revenue from their work. It announced plans to close earlier this year before SoundCloud stepped in.

Under the acquisition, SoundCloud will preserve Nina’s editorial archive and genre map. Artists previously using Nina can choose whether to migrate their music, audience relationships and creative work into SoundCloud’s system.

Those who participate are being offered access to distribution, mastering, promotional tools, analytics, audience development and direct fan monetization. SoundCloud has also emphasized that artists can sell music directly to listeners while retaining their royalties.

The agreement is important because Nina represented a persistent independent-music ambition: building an artist-friendly marketplace outside the economic structure of traditional streaming.

The difficulty is scale.

A platform can offer favorable terms and strong editorial values, but it still needs enough listeners, transactions and recurring activity to remain operational. Artists generally cannot afford to maintain separate communities on numerous services, especially when the largest audience remains concentrated elsewhere.

SoundCloud may be able to preserve parts of Nina’s mission because it already possesses global recognition, a substantial listener base and a long history with independent music discovery.

The acquisition also gives SoundCloud cultural assets that cannot be reproduced simply by adding another software feature. Nina’s editorial archive and detailed genre mapping documented music communities that larger platforms frequently flatten into broad categories.

Preserving that work could help SoundCloud strengthen its identity as a discovery service rather than becoming another interchangeable streaming library.

The long-term test will be whether participating Nina artists receive meaningful visibility—or simply become additional uploads inside a much larger catalog.
