Pimlico’s 2027 Preakness Is on Track, but the Rebuilt Clubhouse Will Not Be Ready

The Preakness is expected to return to Pimlico Race Course in 2027, but the Baltimore tradition will come back before the entire rebuilt complex is finished.

Project leaders said the $400 million transformation remains on track to complete much of its heavy construction in time for the 2027 race. The new clubhouse, however, will not be ready, according to information shared by the Maryland Stadium Authority at a community meeting.

That means the event will look and feel different. Current planning anticipates that much of the race-day activity will be centered on the infield, with an estimated capacity of approximately 20,000 spectators. The final number could change as construction progresses and organizers determine how much of the site can safely accommodate visitors.

The explanation offered to residents is that one budget is being used to address work connected to both Pimlico and Laurel, requiring additional time to finalize design needs and allocate funding. The completed Pimlico vision is expected to include restaurants, bars and an exhibition focused on the race course’s history.

For Park Heights, the larger question is not simply whether the Preakness returns on schedule. Community members want the investment to create lasting value after race weekend ends.

Yolanda Jiggetts, CEO of Park Heights Renaissance, said residents are focused on economic growth, local hiring, minority participation and a facility that feels open to the surrounding community. State Delegate Malcolm Ruff emphasized that the project must improve quality of life in Park Heights, including attention to vacant housing and public safety.

That community standard is important. Pimlico is an internationally recognized Baltimore asset, but its long-term success should be measured by more than a finished grandstand or a full day of television coverage. The redevelopment will also be judged by whether nearby residents see jobs, business opportunities, improved public space and meaningful participation in decisions about parcels surrounding the track.

Neighbors have dealt with dust, noise and construction disruption. They are asking for at least one additional community meeting before the 2027 Preakness, although another date has not been announced.

The return of the race will be an important milestone. It will not be the finish line.
