Peanut Butter Wolf is looking back at the decisions that helped Stones Throw become much more than a Hip-Hop record label. A new Transmissions episode, published October 7th, places the founder’s independent-music journey at the center of the label’s 30th-anniversary year.

The episode’s published description outlines a conversation with host Jason P. Woodbury about Stones Throw’s beginnings, Wolf’s experiences with major labels, and the relationships connecting its artists. Madlib and J Dilla are among the figures discussed, alongside the wider reach of the label’s catalog. The publisher also identifies Adult Swim’s support as part of that evolution.

For Hip-Hop listeners, the useful question is how a label can maintain a recognizable identity while allowing its sound to change. Stones Throw offers a particularly interesting case: its anniversary programming places beat culture beside funk, soul, electronic music and other sounds, giving listeners several paths into the same musical community.

According to Stones Throw’s official anniversary announcement, Wolf founded the label in 1996. Its three-day celebration is scheduled for October 16th–18th in Highland Park, Northeast Los Angeles, near the company’s longtime headquarters. That festival was announced in June; this week’s new development is the interview.

The announced lineup spans artists past and present, including J Rocc, Karriem Riggins, Mndsgn, Los Retros and N8NOFACE. Wildchild and DJ Romes are billed to perform Lootpack’s Soundpieces: Da Antidote!, while special guests include Sudan Archives and Aloe Blacc. The event is presented with Lodge Room and KCRW, and the label says one dollar from each ticket will support local charities.

Taken together, the conversation and anniversary program offer a way to explore independent Hip-Hop beyond a release calendar. Start with a familiar name, then follow the label’s connections to artists outside your usual listening habits. The full Transmissions episode is available through Talkhouse; its publisher flags explicit content.
