Paramount Sets Parker Finn’s Possession Remake for June 2027

Paramount has set June 11, 2027, for the theatrical release of Parker Finn’s remake of the 1981 supernatural drama Possession. Margaret Qualley and Callum Turner lead the new version, giving the studio a summer date for a project built around one of cult cinema’s most intense relationship nightmares.

Finn, who directed Smile and Smile 2, is writing and directing the film. The cast also includes Paul Dano, Diego Calva, Madeline Brewer, Emory Cohen and Nicholas Alexander Chavez, positioning the remake as a star-driven studio release rather than a small specialty title.

The original Possession, directed by Andrzej Żuławski, followed a marriage collapsing amid paranoia, emotional violence and supernatural terror. Isabelle Adjani’s performance became central to the film’s reputation, while the movie itself grew from a divisive release into a frequently discussed landmark of psychological and body horror.

Variety reports that Finn is producing alongside Jonathan Fass, Roy Lee, Andrew Childs and Robert Pattinson, with Marc Bienstock serving as an executive producer. The remake’s story details remain under wraps, so the release date and announced cast are the clearest verified signals about its current direction.

The June opening places Possession opposite Universal’s live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2. That contrast gives moviegoers two sharply different options on the same weekend: a family fantasy sequel and an adult supernatural drama with a filmmaker closely associated with modern studio horror.

The most important creative question is how Finn will translate the original’s raw marital conflict without reducing it to familiar franchise mechanics. A remake can introduce the material to a wider audience, but the 1981 film’s unsettling power came from emotional extremity as much as its supernatural imagery.
