BREAKING: Orioles Reportedly Trade Adley Rutschman to Red Sox

The Orioles reportedly agreed to send three-time All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman to the Boston Red Sox.

The Baltimore Orioles are reportedly sending three-time All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman to the Boston Red Sox in a blockbuster trade between American League East rivals.

According to MLB.com, Boston will receive Rutschman, catcher Jake Rogers and cash. Baltimore’s reported five-player return is headlined by three highly ranked Red Sox prospects:

Right-handed pitcher Anthony Eyanson, Boston’s No. 2 prospect and MLB Pipeline’s No. 49 overall prospect

Right-handed pitcher Kyson Witherspoon, Boston’s No. 4 prospect

Outfielder Enddy Azocar, Boston’s No. 5 prospect

Catcher Carlos Narváez

Neither club had formally confirmed the Rutschman deal at Power1047’s latest check, so the transaction remains a sourced report pending an official announcement. MLB.com reported the complete proposed trade package.

A Franchise-Altering Decision

Rutschman was the No. 1 overall selection in the 2019 MLB Draft and became one of the central figures in Baltimore’s rebuilding process. He helped the Orioles win the American League East in 2023 and reach the postseason again in 2024.

The 28-year-old switch-hitter is batting .251 with a .331 on-base percentage, .433 slugging percentage, eight home runs and 47 RBIs through 67 games this season. He is presently on the injured list with left-wrist inflammation but was reportedly approaching a rehabilitation assignment.

Rutschman remains under team control through the 2027 season.

Sending him to a division rival represents a significant change in direction for an Orioles team that entered Monday at 54–58 but only 2½ games outside the final American League Wild Card position.

Boston, meanwhile, entered the deadline holding the second AL Wild Card spot. The Red Sox have gone 23–3 since July 2, making Rutschman a major addition for their postseason push.

Orioles Also Send Taylor Ward to Seattle

The Rutschman report arrived only hours after Baltimore officially traded outfielder Taylor Ward to the Seattle Mariners for three right-handed pitchers: Alex Hoppe, Brock Moore and Harrison Kreiling. The Orioles’ transaction record confirms the Ward trade.

Ward, who was scheduled to become a free agent after the season, hit .246 with seven home runs, 30 RBIs, 87 walks and a .729 OPS over 111 games for Baltimore.

The Orioles had acquired Ward from the Los Angeles Angels last November in exchange for Grayson Rodriguez. Baltimore also traded starting pitcher Dean Kremer to Minnesota on August 1.

Taken together, the reported Rutschman blockbuster and the confirmed departures of Ward and Kremer signal a dramatic deadline pivot. Baltimore is exchanging established major-league players for younger talent despite remaining within reach of a Wild Card berth.
