Orioles Enter Trade-Deadline Day Facing Their Biggest Decision of the Season

The Baltimore Orioles have reached Major League Baseball’s trade deadline with their direction still unsettled.

Teams have until 6 p.m. ET Monday, August 3, to complete trades. Baltimore enters the day at 54–58 after losing a rain-shortened 8–0 game to Philadelphia on Sunday, leaving the club close enough to the American League playoff picture to resist a complete selloff but inconsistent enough to question whether short-term additions would meaningfully change its season.

President of baseball operations Mike Elias has indicated that the Orioles may not operate as traditional buyers or sellers. Instead, the club could make a combination of moves designed to address the current roster while preserving flexibility for 2027.

Baltimore has already traded starting pitcher Dean Kremer to Minnesota and acquired catcher Jake Rogers from Detroit. Rogers was added after injuries left Adley Rutschman and Samuel Basallo unavailable, while Kremer’s departure created another opening in the pitching staff.

Outfielder Taylor Ward is among the Orioles veterans generating deadline attention. Ward is scheduled to become a free agent after the season and said he would prefer to remain in Baltimore, although he acknowledged that the organization must make the decision it believes is best for the team.

The Orioles may also receive internal pitching help. Veteran right-hander Chris Bassitt struck out four batters during his second Triple-A rehabilitation start and is nearing a return to the major-league staff.

What to Watch Before 6 p.m.

The central question is whether Baltimore trades additional veterans, adds controllable pitching or attempts both. Any move involving Ward, the bullpen or a starting pitcher would materially reshape the final two months of the season.
