Knicks Ring Night and Two Conference Rematches Headline the NBA’s October 20 Opener

The NBA will open its 2026–27 season on October 20 with three nationally televised games, including the New York Knicks’ championship-ring ceremony and LeBron James’ first regular-season appearance with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Boston visits Detroit at 3 p.m. ET to start the NBC and Peacock tripleheader. The matchup brings together two of last season’s strongest Eastern Conference teams and gives the Celtics an early test against a Pistons group led by Cade Cunningham.

The center of the schedule is Philadelphia at New York at 7 p.m. ET. The Knicks will raise their first championship banner in 53 years before hosting a reworked 76ers roster featuring James and Jaylen Brown alongside Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe and Joel Embiid.

Oklahoma City visits San Antonio at 9:30 p.m. ET in a rematch of the 2026 Western Conference finals. The Spurs won that series in seven games after the teams also met in the NBA Cup semifinals and finished first and second in the West during the regular season.

The slate gives the league three different story lines in one day: Detroit’s attempt to confirm last season’s progress, New York’s transition from championship celebration to title defense and a Spurs-Thunder rivalry built around Victor Wembanyama and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

It also marks a major piece of NBC’s NBA presentation. All three games will be carried on NBC and Peacock, turning the opening day into a full afternoon-and-evening package instead of the more familiar two-game nighttime format.

For Baltimore viewers, Philadelphia-New York offers the closest regional draw, while the full lineup provides an early look at several teams likely to shape the championship conversation. The dates and matchups are official; story lines about starting lineups and player availability will remain subject to training camp and preseason developments.
