Thousands Still Without Power After Severe Storms Hit Central Maryland

Utility crews continued restoration work across Central Maryland Wednesday after a powerful line of storms knocked out electricity, damaged trees and disrupted travel.

Baltimore Gas and Electric reported that more than 34,000 customers were affected at the height of the storm-related outages. By 3 p.m. Wednesday, WBAL reported that the utility’s outage map showed 401 active outages affecting nearly 3,500 customers.

Baltimore City and Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Howard and Prince George’s counties were among the hardest-hit areas, according to information provided by BGE.

Full restoration was not expected until Thursday night, meaning some households and businesses could remain without electricity for another day while crews address scattered damage.

The storms brought heavy rain, damaging winds and reports of large hail across parts of Maryland. Flooding and fallen trees were documented from the Baltimore region toward the Eastern Shore, while severe weather also temporarily affected operations at BWI Marshall Airport.

Residents still without service should use BGE’s official outage map for the latest restoration estimate tied to their address. Anyone encountering a downed power line should stay away from it and report the location to emergency services and the utility company.

People relying on powered medical equipment should follow their emergency plans and seek a safe powered location when necessary. Refrigerators and freezers should remain closed as much as possible to preserve food during an extended outage.

Conditions were calmer across Baltimore Wednesday afternoon, with a quieter weather pattern expected into the start of the weekend. Cleanup and restoration, however, will continue in the communities that experienced the most significant damage.
