Maryland Unveils “Los Terps” Football Helmets for Hispanic Heritage Night

Maryland’s “Los Terps” helmets will debut against Virginia Tech during Hispanic Heritage Night at SECU Stadium.

Maryland’s “Los Terps” football helmets will bring a new visual identity to SECU Stadium when the Terrapins host Virginia Tech on September 19. The university unveiled the design Monday as the centerpiece of a Hispanic Heritage Night built to recognize the communities that shape Maryland and the broader DMV.

The red helmet replaces the program’s usual wordmark with “Los Terps,” creating a direct Spanish-language expression of the team’s identity without abandoning Maryland’s familiar colors. The design will appear under the lights for the 7:30 p.m. kickoff, giving the conference matchup a distinct look and a larger cultural purpose.

Maryland’s official announcement describes the celebration as a partnership with El Tiempo Latino. The promotion extends well beyond the uniform: the first 7,500 fans will receive mini-helmet keychains, the first 2,000 students will receive themed shirts and 500 pennants will be available at the Terpsville Fan Fest.

The stadium presentation will continue the theme with Hispanic music and Latin dance during halftime. That full-game approach matters because it makes the night more than a logo swap. Maryland is tying the helmet to community voices, fan experiences and entertainment throughout the event.

The design will also reach fans before kickoff. Maryland says the “Los Terps” football helmets will become a selectable option in EA Sports College Football 27 on September 3. That digital release gives the program several weeks to build awareness before the team wears the helmet against Virginia Tech.

College football alternate uniforms can easily become short-lived social content, but Maryland’s plan has a stronger foundation. The helmet, partnership and stadium programming all point toward the same message: the Terrapins want the DMV’s Hispanic community to see itself represented in the program. PowerPage Sports coverage will follow the initiative through its on-field debut.
