Maryland Opens 2026 Against Hampton With an 18-Game Nonconference Streak

Maryland opens 2026 against Hampton with continuity, a national streak and an opponent stepping onto a new stage. The Terrapins host the Pirates on Saturday, September 5, at 8 p.m. at SECU Stadium in the first football meeting between the programs. Big Ten Network will carry the game.

The most important number behind Maryland’s opener is 71 percent. That is the share of last season’s production returning to College Park, a figure the program says ranks second nationally. The defense brings back 74 percent of its production, while the offense returns 68 percent after a season that gave several young players major roles.

Quarterback Malik Washington leads that group after setting Maryland freshman passing records in 2025. Running back DeJuan Williams, tight end Dorian Fleming and leading tackler Daniel Wingate are also back, giving head coach Michael Locksley experienced answers at the center of all three units.

Maryland is protecting the nation’s longest active nonconference winning streak at 18 games. Under Locksley, the Terrapins are 20–1 outside Big Ten play and have averaged 40.3 points in those games. The streak gives the opener weight beyond the expected gap between a Big Ten roster and an HBCU visitor.

Hampton arrives 1–0 after opening the Van Malone era with a 45–0 shutout of Virginia University of Lynchburg. Saturday will be the Pirates’ first game against a Power Four opponent, making the trip to College Park a program milestone. That history should keep Maryland’s focus on execution rather than treating the night as a routine warmup.

The opener is also the first public test for new offensive coordinator Clint Trickett and a staff that added former Terrapins Randy Starks and Kyle Schmitt. Maryland has experience, home field and a long streak on its side. The question is whether those advantages produce the sharper, more physical start Locksley has demanded.
