Laremy Tunsil’s Torn Triceps Forces an Early Test of Washington’s Offensive Line

Washington will turn to Brandon Coleman at left tackle while Laremy Tunsil recovers.

The Washington Commanders will enter the most important part of preseason preparation without the player assigned to protect the quarterback’s blind side.

Head coach Dan Quinn confirmed Monday that left tackle Laremy Tunsil will undergo surgery to repair a torn triceps. Washington hopes the five-time Pro Bowl selection can return during the season, but Quinn said the team will not have a reliable timetable until after the procedure.

Typical recovery from the injury can range from four to seven months. That range makes any immediate return projection speculative and puts Washington’s early-season planning under pressure.

Brandon Coleman will move into the starting left-tackle role. Quinn said the Commanders do not currently intend to seek an outside replacement, meaning the coaching staff is choosing continuity over an emergency veteran search.

Tunsil reportedly suffered the injury during a one-on-one training-camp rep Saturday against edge rusher Odafe Oweh. He was acquired from Houston in March 2025 and started all 14 games he played for Washington last season. In March, he signed a two-year extension containing $61.5 million in total guarantees and an average annual value of $30 million.

For a Baltimore-centered audience, this is the most consequential nearby NFL development outside the Ravens on Monday. Washington’s ability to hold up at left tackle will affect the offense’s protection plan, play-calling and the amount of help required from tight ends and backs.

Coleman now receives the first opportunity. How Washington distributes practice reps and whether it revisits the outside market will be the next developments worth tracking—not an assumed recovery date that doctors have not yet established.
