Kneads Bakeshop Expansion Carries Baltimore Roots Into Washington

The Kneads Bakeshop Expansion is carrying a Baltimore-grown bakery and café concept deeper into the Washington region. Kneads’ official locations page now lists planned cafés in Navy Yard and Logan Circle, along with a coming Chevy Chase location in Montgomery County.

The Navy Yard site is planned for the Thompson Washington, D.C., at 221 Tingey Street SE. Reporting from Eater DC identifies the space as a roughly 5,500-square-foot location expected to include a pastry counter, full-service bar, dining room, remote-work area, and outdoor patio. A redesign is expected to begin in September ahead of a projected October opening.

Kneads also lists a future Logan Circle café at 1460 P Street NW. The expansion creates a multi-neighborhood Washington presence while the company continues to operate its Baltimore locations in Harbor East, Canton, and Cross Keys. Chevy Chase adds a Maryland bridge between those markets.

The Baltimore-first angle matters because Kneads is not entering the region as an anonymous national chain. The concept is connected to the Paterakis family and H&S Bakery, whose Baltimore baking history stretches back generations. Kneads translates that foundation into an all-day café format built around artisan breads, pastries, coffee, breakfast, and lunch.

Navy Yard’s planned layout also signals a broader hospitality strategy. A bar, patio, and extended dining space can support more occasions than a grab-and-go bakery counter, while the work area positions the café for daytime neighborhood traffic. That mix could help Kneads build recognition beyond customers already familiar with the Baltimore brand.

Opening schedules remain subject to construction and operational changes, so the company’s locations page should be the final check before visiting. Even with those dates still developing, the expansion shows a local food business using Baltimore credibility as the starting point for regional growth—not treating Baltimore as an afterthought.
